HARAMBEE <\/strong>(“all pull together” in Swahili) is a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization helping those in sub-Saharan Africa affected by HIV.<\/p>\n

We do this in a variety of ways:<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Education here and in Africa to raise awareness.  Click here<\/a> to see a map showing geographic  proportions of HIV-related deaths worldwide;  you'll see why I am so impassioned about this work.<\/p>\n

2. Health care initiatives using volunteers & telemedicine technology.  Most importantly, we support medical education of Kenyans in our Grow A Doc<\/a> program.<\/p>\n

3. microeconomics projects giving women and children a “hand up” to care for themselves
without relying on a handout.<\/p>\n

4. Marketing fair trade crafts<\/a> made by co-op work groups & accepting donations for our projects.<\/p>\n

5. building communication bridges between school groups here and in Africa.<\/p>\n

HARAMBEE <\/strong>promotes partnership with those we want to help. The height of empowerment is the ability to empower another. Therefore, all projects we adopt require participants to give back to their community. E.g., those who receive a dairy goat give the first-born kid to another family; when teaching oral rehydration therapy for infants, we educate trainers who continue teaching when we have left. We foster good management practices, accountability, and sustainability. We have no overhead or salaries, and every penny gets squeezed ‘til it begs for mercy.<\/p>\n

Family & community initiatives in Kenya, Zambia, Uganda, & <\/span>Rwanda<\/span><\/p>\n

Solar cooker distribution & education<\/p>\n

Solar lamps for students<\/p>\n

Grow A Doc<\/a> contractual scholarships for Kenyans to provide health care in rural areas<\/p>\n

AMEN (Africa Medical Education Network) for U.S.\/Kenya student collaboration<\/p>\n

Project in development: Veterinary student service program<\/p>\n
