2013<\/strong>: Note:  there was confusion recently about the price of goats.  The above is the current correct price.  It includes the cost of transporting the goat from the farm to the family and helping, where needed, to build a shed for the goat.  These are high-class goats and must sleep on a platform!  The good news is that this is a gift that keeps on giving.  There have been more than 200 dairy goats distributed to families, and they keep multiplying, usually birthing twins! So for the price of one goat, we end with many goats.  Because Upendo Village provides good management and accountability, baby goats are shared with neighbors, further developing the spirit of community.  You can help make this happen, materially contributing to greater fairness in the world.  What a wonderful thought!<\/p>\n

2008:  Less than two years ago—two weeks before Christmas of 2006—the idea surfaced that HARAMBEE could be doing something similar to Heifer, International (a nonprofit donating animals to people in developing countries).  Dairy goats and chickens would work best.  And we could do it better:  cheaper, and more personably. <\/span><\/h3>\n

I made a sample gift card and presented it to my faith community, stating I would take a photo of the goat donor to the Kenyan recipient family, and then return with photos of them for the donors.  Even better, the U.S. donors got to name their gift goat!  <\/p>\n

To my utter amazement the idea caught on and spread like wildfire.  I was inundated with orders for goats and spent every free minute (including all day Christmas Day) making goat gift cards.   The story was similar for the chickens, and repeated last Christmas.  Donations for goats and chickens have come in from 15 different states.<\/p>\n

We have provided hundreds of chickens and 80 high quality dairy goats, yielding up to 3 liters of milk per day, to HIV+ families in Kenya.  Here are some of their photos.  Each has a wonderful story;  chickens are shared,  and each firstborn kid is given to another deserving family.  The very first goat has given birth twice, both times to twins.  So for the price of a single goat, we have five.  Everywhere I visit these grateful families I hear accounts of wondrous goat milk:  it is like medicine for people whose lives are unimaginably difficult and whose nutrition and health are very poor.  The children are gaining weight and get sick less often.  One HIV+ woman, Nancy, gave goat milk to her new baby instead of nursing her.  Not recommended by WHO, but at a  year of age, Baby Mary is healthy, chubby, and HIV-negative.<\/p>\n

This year HARAMBEE has built a piggery in Zambia (as well as a women’s poultry co-op) and we’re offering gift cards for pigs, $50 each.  These are high-quality pigs, and they come with lipstick.<\/p>\n

Goats have risen in price to $175.  Chickens are still $15 a pair.<\/p>\n

It is miraculous & YOU made the miracle happen.   What could be better?!  Together we are acting as God’s hands on earth.
